Chilie's primary income comes from nitrates. At the beginning of the 20th century, poor living and working conditions caused a great deal of unrest among the workers at the nitrate facilities and led to the well known Santa Maria School massacre where over 2000 men, women and children became victims of a horrible slaughter.
